One of the reasons I love where we live is the diversity of wildlife. Keeping track of all the animals that visit is daunting. On this page, I’ve started tracking the various birds that either visit or live here year-round.
A tool I’ve recently downloaded that really helps with bird species identification is the Cornell Labs’ “MERLIN Bird ID” app. This app uses your phone’s microphone to record the surrounding noise and lists any birds whose call is recognized. The list provides an image and samples of various calls the species makes.
Expect this list to grow and improve over time as I (re)discover more species.
The table below has flags to indicate birds that we’ve actually seen in the yard, birds we’ve seen visiting our feeders, and birds MERLIN has identified. Ones that have only been found by MERLIN are indicated in the “Notes” column.
Side note: While more than 50% of all bird species are in the order Passeriformes (perching birds), we have an even higher percentage (70.2%) in our yard. This is because we’re surrounded by woodlands. All those trees with all those branches attract Passeriformes.
From the perspective of biological taxonomy these are birds, which are all defined as Domain “Eukaryota”, Kingdom “Animalia”, Phylum “Chordata”, Class “Aves”. Within the class of birds, the Order, Family, Genus and Species will vary.
All taxonomic data has been verified and updated using the IOC World Bird List, version 13.2 (2023). Taxonomies have minor differences at Wikipedia, All About Birds, and eBirdr (the sources for the links in the table below).
